Malawi first stake created

On June, 2nd a historic moment happened for the saints in Malawi which is part of the Zambia Lusaka Mission (1461788). The first stake in that country was organized from the Lilongwe Malawi District, the Lilongwe Malawi Stake (2041243). The stake comprises 8 units which are 7 wards from the initial 7 branches upgraded to ward status and a newly created branch. These are Kalambo 1st Ward (1989480), Kalambo 2nd Ward (2247097), Kasungu 1st Ward (2163918), Kasungu 2nd Ward (2184559), Kawale Ward (2067218), Lilongwe Ward (545325), Presidential Way Ward (1983733), and Chinsapo Branch (2261502). 

The Lilongwe Malawi District was created in March 2015 making it the second district organized in the country of Malawi after the Blantyre Malawi District (1624970) which was organized in April 2011. 

History of the Church in Malawi

The first members of the Church in Malawi were expatriates living in Lilongwe in the early 1990s.  Paperwork was submitted for official recognition of the Church in 1991.  The first convert baptisms occurred in the country in July 1992.  Later that year, Malawi was included in the Zimbabwe Harare Mission and the first missionaries to visit were a senior couple.  They baptized many Malawians, some of which waited many years to join the Church.  The Church was officially registered with the government in 1995.  The first missionaries to live in the country arrived in 1999 and resided in Blantyre and visited the Sitima weekly. Seminary and institute began in 2002.  In late 2010, full-time missionaries serving in the Zimbabwe Harare Mission reported that in 2011 a new mission headquartered in Lusaka, Zambia would administer Malawi.
